Yakult, DuPont, Danone and Watsons join stellar line-up for first Probiota Asia summit in Singapore

Top-level speakers from a raft of major probiotics manufacturers and suppliers will join international academics to present at our first Probiota Asia summit in Singapore in October.

Today, we can announce that Toshihisa Ota from Yakult Central Institute will be unveiling the latest findings around the firm's Lactobacillus casei​ strain Shirota (LcS) and cancer prevention.

Also appearing at the event, to be held at the Hilton Hotel from 11 to 13 October, will be Cyndy Au, regional director, Regulatory & Scientific Affairs at DuPont Nutrition & Health,  and an associate fellow at the Institute of Asian Consumer Insights. She will be discussing Heritage, innovation and growth: The probiotics market in Asia'​ while her colleague Dr Anders Henriksson will be shedding light on how probiotics can help fight diabetes.

From the pharmacy space, Dr Joy Wong, principal clinical pharmacist at Watsons, will present a practitioner perspective on consumer understanding and health benefits.

A soon-to-be-announced speaker from Danone will also be speaking at the summit.

In the first wave of speaker announcements made last month, we confirmed that leading academics from the US, Japan, Australia and Singapore would address the inaugural event.

Cancer treatments, the intestinal microbiome and probiotics ​will be the topic assessed by Professor Luis Vitetta, the director of Medical Research at the University of Sydney Medical School.

Associate Professor Lynne V. McFarland, from the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Seattle, will examine the Efficacy of single- or multi-strain probiotic mixtures,​ while Dr Bejit Ideas, president of the Japanese Society of Anti-Ageing Nutrition, will look at the latest developments in probiotics and skin health.

Associate Professor Liu Shao Quan, from the Food Science and Technology Programme at the National University of  Singapore, will then reveal how his team is Enabling the survival of probiotics in beer — Overcoming three key hurdles​.

Call for abstracts

Meanwhile, researchers and those engaged in all aspects of microbiome science in academia, industry, and consumer health are now being urged to submit abstracts to the scientific committee.

Successful authors will be invited to present their work either as an oral presentation or in a poster at Probiota Asia.

Those whose abstracts are accepted as posters will receive a 50% discount on their registration for the conference. 

Early-phase, novel, or state-of-the-art research or promising ideas covering the following topics are encouraged, including:

- Host-microbe interactions in health and disease, including preclinical and clinical studies evaluating pre- and probiotic interventions.

- Application and development of '-omics' approaches in biomarker discovery, including identification of potential pre- and probiotic strains. Research identifying strain-specific effects of probiotics for health and wellbeing, including mechanism of action, and bioactive discovery and isolation.

- Early findings from large-scale research projects and clinical trials.

- Innovations and novel ideas in the areas of production processes, delivery, formulation and shelf-life.

- Consumer and market insights, including population research, trends and threats, and commercial packaging and marketing.

- Human intervention studies.
