The inaugural NutraIngredients-Asia Awards will take place in Singapore on 10 September, the evening before Vitafoods Asia 2018 gets underway.

The awards are open to companies across the globe, providing their products or ingredients are available in at least one APAC market.

The 12 award categories include:

  • Ingredient of the Year: Infant Nutrition
  • Ingredient of the Year: Healthy Ageing
  • Ingredient of the Year: Weight Management
  • Probiotic Product of the Year
  • Botanical Product of the Year
  • Omega-3 Product of the Year
  • Personalised Nutrition Initiative
  • Start-up Award
  • Nutrition Research Project
  • NutraChampion award (entries by nomination only)
  • Editors' Award for Functional Food Innovation

The cost per entry is US$175 for all categories except the NutraChampion award and Editors' Award for Functional Food Innovation, for which entry is free. Entries will close on 24 May.

The awards will feature a panel of esteemed judges with a wealth of experience in APAC's health and nutrition industry.

They are:

Carl Gibson

Carl is the CEO of trade body Complementary Medicines Australia (CMA). He started his career in the UK as a public servant, before joining the Conservative Party as a media and political adviser, and served under UK Prime Minister John Major from 1990 to 1994.

His career spans over 25 years and he has specialised in regulation, public policy and campaign communications. He was part of the senior leadership teams that transformed Allscripts-Misys, the US healthcare software company, and UK nuclear generator British Energy.

Gibson was most recently Head of Brand & Communications at Australia's leading natural health company Blackmores, before being appointed Chief Executive of CMA in September 2013.

Dr Siti Noorbaiyah binti Abdul Malek

Dr Siti Noorbaiyah binti Abdul Malek is an Associate Professor at the Singapore Institute of Technology. Starting as a lecturer at Institute Teknologi MARA (now UiTM) in Malaysia, she left the academic world after close to 20 years to bring her expertise to the food industry in Malaysia.

As the CEO of UnipeQ Sdn. Bhd., she managed a premier training, consultancy and laboratory service provider in the Malaysian food industry. After five years, she decided to go regional and joined Food Industry Asia (FIA).

As the Head of Regulatory Affairs, her principal role was to provide expert guidance and technical support to the FIA members and its standing committees.

While at FIA, she also served a dual role as the Executive Director of the ASEAN Food and Beverage Alliance (AFBA), where her top priority was to champion the F&B industry's voice in the ASEAN Economic Community initiative, specifically for the harmonisation of food standards.

She holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Food Science from Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA.

Dr Iain Brownlee

Dr Iain Brownlee is a Senior Research Scientist with CSIRO in Australia in nutrition and health. His research has been particularly focused on the impact of dietary fibres and whole grains on gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and metabolic health.

He has been involved in a number of projects evaluating dietary intake in young Singaporeans, and considering public health recommendations and health claim regulations around South East Asia. He has also collaborated with experts from the food, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries throughout his career.

His work has resulted in three patents and over 40 highly cited, peer-reviewed publications. He is currently involved in research projects in Singapore, Malaysia and the UK.

Sandeep Gupta

Sandeep Gupta has over 22 years of industry experience, during which he has launched more than 200 nutraceutical products and evaluated more than 1,000 ingredients.

He worked extensively on India's Food Safety & Standards Regulation, which came into force earlier this year.

He currently holds multiple roles in the industry, including Chairman of the Standard Review Group (SRG) for nutraceuticals at Indian regulator FSSAI, President and national spokesperson at the National Advocacy Council for Nutraceuticals, Health, Dietary & Protein Supplements (United Nutraceutical Product Alliance), executive committee member and Vice Chairman of the IDMA nutraceutical committee, and founder and CEO of the Nutraworks Foundation.

Presently, his main agenda is to expand the nutraceutical and probiotic market, and he has been effectively campaigning for such products to be placed in the lowest possible GST bracket. This has led to the GST being lowered from 28% to 18%, and he is striving to see this reduced to 12% or 5% for the benefit of the general public.

Clarence Fong

Clarence Fong has been working extensively as an international market consultant, and has successfully facilitated the entry of European and other Western healthcare companies into the Chinese market.

He was raised in Hong Kong, educated in Australia, and has worked and lived in mainland China since 2007, giving him a unique perspective on the exceptional growth of the Chinese nutritional supplement market.

He speaks fluent English, Cantonese and Mandarin, making him valuable in facilitating cross-cultural business exchanges.

Rieko Shofu

Banking on her wealth of experience in supporting market entry into Asia, Rieko Shofu established business consultancy Sensing Asia in 2014.

She started her consulting career at Hakuhodo Inc., where she was the Executive Manager of the Corporate Design department, which addressed business and brand consulting.

She is a member of the Regional Science and Technology promotion committee at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, editor of Marketing Horizon — published by the Japan Marketing Association — and a participant at THNK School of Creative Leadership (Amsterdam).

We will reveal the other seven judges next week.

The NutraIngredients-Asia Awards will follow the NutraIngredients Awards in May and the NutraIngredients-USA Awards in July, which means entrants have the chance to be crowned winners across APAC, Europe and the Americas.

NutraIngredients-Asia editor-in-chief Gary Scattergood said: "Our awards will shine the spotlight on the companies responsible for innovation and excellence across finished products, ingredients and research.

"We have had recruited a top-class judging panel from across industry and academia to ensure each category is effectively assessed in a fair and impartial manner.

"We are looking forward to crowing the industry's brightest and best in September, where winning an award will be a great promotional springboard for business success at Vitafoods Asia."
