India-based Arjuna Natural Extracts renamed its patented curcumin to Curcugreen. Its previous name was BCM-95, which is trademarked by the ingredient’s former US distributor.

US distributor DolCas Biotech, LLC owns the trademarked BCM-95 name that was used for the curcumin ingredient. Arjuna announced the name change earlier this month in a press release. It also announced that it will be marketing Curcugreen directly to the US market without a separate distributor.

The distribution of Curcugreen to US finished product makers is now handled by Arjuna’s Dallas, TX sales office.

"Our priority is to ensure our customers and consumers that our patented composition—the safety and therapeutic benefits of which have been validated by more than 50 scientific studies—will continue to be available without any change in the composition," said P.J. Kunjachan, chairman and managing director for Arjuna.

"Arjuna Natural will market the same patented composition under its own trademark, Curcugreen.”

Arjuna Natural Extracts will be exhibiting at the SupplySide West Expo 2018 in Las Vegas next week at booth #2378.

Supplement buyers pay attention to branded ingredient names

EuroPharma, maker of supplement brand Terry Naturally, issued a press release regarding the ingredient’s name change. Its CuraMed and Curamin family of products use the patented curcumin supplied by Arjuna Natural Extracts.

Ingredient rebranding may seem like news only for the B2B space, but it is also relevant to many consumers, Cheryl Meyers, chief education and scientific affairs at the company told us.

“Especially for those who are motivated by the science behind certain types of products,” she added.

“[Curcugreen] is the most clinically-studied enhanced absorption curcumin in the world, with over 50 published studies, over 20 of which are human clinical trials,” she said. In the PubMed database alone, which consists of published studies registered with the US National Library of Medicine, a search for Curcurgreen’s old brand name BCM-95 returned eight results.

“Individuals researching the various forms of curcumin available on the market may find that branding helps to differentiate the products they are considering, and inform their choice of what they consider to be the best curcumin.”
