The potential of cell-based protein to sustainably and nutritiously feed Asia's growing and ageing population will be assessed by the CEO of Shiok Meats at our second Healthy Ageing APAC Summit in Singapore.

The firm recently completed a $4.6m seed round funding to help fund its mission to commercialise shrimp made from so-called ‘clean meat’.

The Singapore company’s CEO and co-founder Dr Sandhya Sriram will take to the stage at the summit, which is organised by FoodNavigator-Asia and NutraIngredients-Asia and takes place from July 9-11.

In her talk, ‘Cell-based seafood: Overcoming consumer and regulatory concerns to create a new healthy and sustainable food group’, she’ll assess how Asia’s aging population is also growing, with total numbers set to rise from 4.5bn today to 5.3bn in 2050.

This means sustainability has become an increasing concern in the food industry, with interest in lab-grown products such as cell-based meats on the rise.

Dr Sriram will discuss not only the sustainability benefits of cell-based seafood, but also its health benefits for a growing and ageing population, as well as the consumer and regulatory challenges that need to be overcome.

Key highlights will include:

• How cell-based seafood can tackle sustainability concerns to feed a growing and ageing population, and meet protein needs

• The health benefits of cell-based seafood and how it can improve the health of the broader population

• How to overcome scepticism and fears associated with lab-based products and  new technology

• Overcoming regulatory hurdles and cost barriers to drive costs down and bring cell-based seafood to the mass market
