The academic who pioneered the concept of vasoactive nutrients – which can boost blood flow in all tissues – will reveal how resveratrol can enhance cognitive performance and mood, and reduce pain perception at our second Healthy Ageing APAC Summit.

Professor Peter Howe, from University of Newcastle and University of Southern Queensland, is an expert in vasoactive nutrients, namely specific bioactives such as omega-3 fatty acids and certain polyphenols that can boost blood flow in all tissues, including the brain, by enhancing endothelial function.

Together with Dr Rachel Wong and their Clinical Nutrition Research Centre team, he has shown that supplementation with these nutrients has the capacity to counteract the development and progression of chronic diseases impacting ageing Western societies.

Their greatest success comes from recent clinical trials with resveratrol, the most potent vasoactive nutrient that they have evaluated. Regular supplementation improves the health of blood vessels throughout the body, including in the brain, where it enhances mood and cognitive performance and reduces pain perception.

The circulatory benefits of resveratrol extend to other tissues, improving glucose metabolism in diabetes and reducing postmenopausal bone loss and fracture risk.

At the summit, organised by NutraIngredients-Asia and FoodNavigator-Asia, Prof Howe will illustrate these benefits with a preview of unpublished results from the RESHAW trial, the largest and most recent trial of its kind in postmenopausal women.

Prof Howe’s multidisciplinary preclinical and clinical research in nutrition, cardiovascular physiology and neuroscience has underpinned health claims for functional foods and nutraceuticals, and he has published 270 papers with over 8,000 citations

Leading industry summit

The event, which takes place at Singapore’s Hilton hotel from July 11, will assess how food and nutrition solutions can meet the needs of Asia’s rapidly ageing societies.

With the number of over-60s in Asia set to double to 1.3bn by 2050, the event will look at how the nutrition and food industry can meet the needs of the rapidly ageing populations of today, and more crucially, tomorrow.

This means we’ll be shining the spotlight of the latest product innovations, ingredient discoveries and research targeted at older consumers, while also assessing what industry is doing to improve the health of younger consumers, so they can ultimately lead a more active and healthy, as well as a longer older age in the future.

Other confirmed speakers at the event include:

Dr Siow Ying Tan, PepsiCo’s R&D Global External Innovation Lead of Academic Partnership

Dr Jorg Hager, Head of the Metabolic Health Department at Nestlé’s Institute of Health Science.
