South Korean probiotic brand Youguth is expanding its e-commerce reach in Singapore, with women the key target demographic for its symbiotic products.

Youguth first entered Singapore in October 2019 through its e-commerce store, major pharmacies such as Guardian, Unity and Watsons as well as Robinsons departmental store.

Now, the company is expanding its e-commerce presence to Amazon SG and Lazada.

Youguth probiotics contain a synergistic combination of prebiotics and probiotics, and come in powdered sachets.

The firm is known for its proline probiotics based on technology patended by CKDBio, its parent company.

Proline is an amino acid produced by various plants as a defence material to survive extreme environments and when added to probiotics, increases the their ability to withstand stomach acid and ensure gut health efficacy. Each sachet contains 100 billion CFUs.

Best-sellers

Gerlyn Chan, marketing manager at Alpha Pioneer, Youguth official distributor in Singapore said the top three best selling products in Singapore were its Lady Charming Up (for women), Child Strength Up (for children), and Green Energy Up (for busy adults).

Our main consumers are females. This could be because many mothers are the ones taking care of the children and are frequently looking out for beneficial health products for the whole family, A heavy emphasis is also usually placed on the health and development of children in the family.”

Chan said the Lady Charming Up product contain vitamin C and collagen which offered a beauty function in addition to improving gut health.

Chan told NutraIngredients-Asia: “Mothers also find the milk-flavoured Child Strength Up a tasty and fun way for their children to take their supplements.”

The Child Strength Up product is recommended for kids aged one year and above, and contains zinc and colostrum to build immunity.

The Green Energy Up product was targeted for males and females with busy lifestyles, and contain B vitamins to provide an energy-boosting effect.

Covid-19

The firm observed a marginal increase in its sales in Q1 2020 during the Covid-19 period compared to Q4 2019, with Chan stating: “Many [people] have looked to the consumption of health supplements to strengthen their immunity and stay healthy.”

Many studies have shown that the gut microbiome plays an essential role in maintaining the body’s overall health and immune response to infections. In addition, research had also shown that probiotics could help ease diarrhoea symptoms, treat constipation, reduce risk of upper respiratory tract infections as well as risks of developing eczema and allergies.

According to Chan: “70% of our immune system is located in the gut, it is important to maintain a balanced and healthy intestinal environment in order to effectively boost immunity against viral infections.

“With the current Covid-19 situation, consumers are becoming more health conscious and looking for ways to strengthen their immunity.”
