/News/Brands-manufacturers — According to the South Korean company, there has been a “clear trend” in recent times that leans towards a preference for dietary supplements combining multiple nutrients in one product, rather than taking them separately.
Daewoong introduced a new health functional food product called Haapssen on July 14, marking the first time it has launched a multi-nutrient supplement.
“Daewoong actively considers feedback collected through consumer interviews during the product development stage. These include complicated timing of intake and missing doses frequently, concerns about unnecessary double intake due to overlapping ingredients, not knowing what [product] to choose, and the inconvenience of taking multiple products,” said Ko Seong-jae, Team Leader of Health Functional Food Division at Daewoong Pharmaceutical.
“With the growing demand for omni-functional supplements comprising ingredients like omega-3, magnesium, vitamins B, D and C, and probiotics, the term ‘combined nutritional supplement’ is no longer unfamiliar.
“In the past, people had to buy multiple products containing different ingredients and take several pills, but Haapssen allows you to manage basic health with just two capsules daily, reducing the burden and increasing practicality.”
Additionally, Haapssen is priced competitively, costing approximately KRW1,330 (US$ 0.96) per day or KRW39,900 (US$ 28.70) per month, making it more economical than purchasing multiple products.
“Haapssen is a product that was developed based on the concerns of actual [supplement] users. Since it is designed to help people take care of their basic health, which is the foundation of health management, more simply and efficiently, we expect this launch to set a new standard in the era of multi-nutrient supplements.”
Convenient and efficient
Specifically, Haapssen composes of 600mg of rTG omega-3 (containing EPA and DHA) for healthy blood circulation, 157.5mg of magnesium necessary for muscle and nerve health, eight types of high-dose B vitamins for vitality and energy metabolism, 100mg of vitamin C for antioxidant action, 4000IU of high-dose vitamin D to support bone and oral health, 2bn CFU of lactic acid bacteria for intestinal health, and 4mg of astaxanthin to relieve eye fatigue.
“To solve the problem of complicated intake methods and overlapping ingredients pointed out by consumers, Haapssen provides seven basic nutrients, which Koreans are prone to have deficiencies of, in a convenient way.
“The intake of two capsules a day is targeted at meeting 100% of the daily intake standard recommended by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS).”
For the development of this product, Daewoong Pharmaceutical applied two key technologies — X-GIS and BearShield.
The X-GIS technology is said to stably encapsulate the six main ingredients within an omega-3 base oil.
This minimizes the use of bulky additives seen in existing health functional foods, reducing volume and increasing concentration despite the complex composition, and enabling the consumption of just two capsules per day.
On the other hand, the BearShield technology is a patented enteric coating technology that protects the ingredients from stomach acid, helping the capsules safely reach the intestines.
“This process ensures that even lactic acid bacteria, which are particularly sensitive to stomach acid, are delivered to the intestines. It can be taken on an empty stomach or after a meal, allowing for flexibility in daily consumption.”
