Japanese firm YURU Co Ltd has introduced a new eye supplement containing liposomal lutein and coupled it with a proprietary habit support app catering to “supplement refugees”.

Named LUTE VITA, the product is aimed at addressing the damage caused by daily exposure to blue light and ultraviolet rays, as well as the growing health and beauty consciousness among modern consumers.

The ingredients were selected and formula developed by YURU’s CEO, Takayuki Seko, who has a PhD in Pharmacy and is a behavioral science researcher.

Additionally, the company has created a dedicated app called nometa to help consumers manage their supplement habits, with features serving to maintain consumption motivation.

“Supplements are not medicine. That’s why it’s all about whether you want to take them every day. As we face the unstable rhythms of modern life, increased screen time, and the decline that comes with aging, we are once again realizing the importance of taking care of ourselves from the inside out.

“LUTE VITA is a supplement that combines scientifically based ingredients with mechanisms that support habit formation, so that you can add something right or even a little better to your daily life,” said Seko.

Officially launched on August 1, the supplement is available via YURU’s official online store and affiliated e-commerce sites.

The main ingredient in its formula is LUZvision, a liposomal lutein manufactured and supplied by Ming Chyi Biotechnology, which is clinically shown to have an absorption rate approximately 4.8 times higher than conventional lutein.

LUZvision is a free lutein powder extracted from marigold and combined with zeaxanthin in a 5:1 ratio, which is the optimal proportion backed by AREDS2, a major clinical trial by the National Eye Institute in the US.

As lutein and zeaxanthin exhibit higher bioavailability when combined with fats or lipids, the absorption of these carotenoids requires consideration of both micellar and chylomicron formation.

By encapsulating the powder with medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) and phospholipids (liposomes), its bioavailability and water solubility is enhanced.

Moreover, it can dissolve in chilled water and remain stable during heating, storage, and processing. These features enable myriad applications in nutrition and health products.

Besides LUZvision, the formula comprises various ingredients that support beauty and ageing. These include astaxanthin, Coenzyme Q10, low molecular weight hyaluronic acid, collagen peptides, ceramide, horse placenta, β-Nicotinamide mononucleotide (β-NMN), liposomal vitamin C, vitamin E, and vitamin A.

Each packet of LUTE VITA contains 120 capsules, with the recommended daily intake being four capsules.

Supplement experience based on behavioral science

According to YURU, nometa is another “main ingredient” that improves the supplement-taking experience.

“As a behavioral science researcher, what I learned is that supplements can only demonstrate their true value if they have a system that allows you to continue taking them and that allows you to believe in their effectiveness.

“The power of human expectations and beliefs is so powerful that it has been shown to cause actual biochemical changes in the brain and even affect the endocrine system. nometa is more than just a recording app. It’s part of a new supplement experience that helps people create a habit that they can trust and continue.”

Based on the belief that supplements are only meaningful if taken consistently, the app focuses on behavioral change through several key functions.

For instance, the daily intake record and reminder notifications prevent the user from forgetting to take supplements, while updates on continuous intake days and support messages motivate users to maintain supplement consumption.

“The app automatically delivers the latest research data and support messages at appropriate timings to make the user experience a sense of enjoyment and satisfaction.

“By understanding the effects [of supplements] on the body, the user can feel more at ease. This way, nometa helps to bolster consumer trust in supplements.”

The nometa app is available on YURU’s official store and does not require installation. It can be added to a smartphone’s home screen and used like a regular app by clicking on the icon.

Although it is designed to facilitate the administration of LUTE VITA, it can also be utilized for the management of other supplements.
