Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are a generic term for oligosaccharides with diverse structures contained in human breast milk. It is the third most abundant solid component in human breast milk, with top 2 being lactose and lipids. It is generally proposed to classify the HMOs according to the property of saccharides, into neutral HMOs and acidic HMOs.
Breast feeding is being recognized as the gold standard of infant nutrition by the World Health Organization (WHO). It is suggested that these indigestible oligosaccharides specifically found rich in human breast milk, could be related in providing prebiotic, immunological, anti-pathogen, as well as gut and intestinal health properties, supporting healthy infant growth, as well as a potential game-changer for wellness in all age groups.
