Mimicking mother’s milk: Morinaga Milk Industry to focus NPD on probiotic applications in infant formula

Japanese dairy giant Morinaga Milk Industry has plans to centre its NPD​ in the upcoming year around the incorporation of its proprietary probiotic strain into infant formula, to aid with gut health and immune protection.

Morinaga’s Bifidobacterium longum​BB536 strain​ was first isolated from the gut of a healthy breastfed infant in 1969 and commercialised in 1977.

BB536 is a clinically proven multifunctional probiotic strain and is based on more than 180 scientific studies​ done over the years.

Super antioxidant for skin health: Singaporean start-up launches beauty food with SOD-rich lemons

Singaporean start-up Innoso has developed a superoxide dismutase (SOD)-rich beauty food aimed at producing anti-ageing, skin whitening and brightening effects.

SOD is categorised as a primary antioxidant which produces superior antioxidant effect as compared to secondary antioxidants such as vitamin C and CoQ10.

Selling under the brand name Lumina, the firm spent one year fine-tuning the formula consisting of emerald lemon extract – the source of SOD, golden yeast, and beta-glucan, Nutraingredients-Asia learnt​ from senior product manager Cecilia Ng.

Thai manufacturer Healthful Co has seen domestic sales spike for its functional drink​, which claims to aid sleep, after gaining recognition in the South Korean market.

The company saw a 35% month-on-month growth for Nice Dream – a functional beverage to improve sleep quality and insomnia – in the domestic market after it was awarded number one in Korea Satisfaction Consumer Index.

The firm first introduced the relaxation drink in Thailand two years ago and went into the South Korean market via e-commerce in Q3 last year – bringing in sales of KRW$2m (US$1,693) in only 10 minutes after its launch on local e-commerce site Wadiz.
