Probiotics is one of the fast-developing categories in Asia’s nutraceutical sector, so this round-up is shining the spotlight on the latest NPD and research – ahead of our Probiota Asia digital summit, which gets underway this week.

Indian sports nutrition brand MuscleBlaze is planning to include probiotics​ in its new product formulations, as well as exploring new dosage formats that can be fitted into consumers’ daily diet.

The brand by Indian firm Bright Lifecare was crowned the Sports Nutrition Product of the Year in last month’s NutraIngredients-Asia Awards​ with its product MuscleBlaze Biozyme Whey.

The judges commended the product’s commitment to high standards and achieving accreditation for its claims and product purity, on top of delivering clear benefits to consumers.

Pre/probiotics and TCM: Singapore wellness group launches functional beverages, cookies combining East-West concept

JOYRE, a Singapore TCM wellness company specialising in spa services, has developed its first range of functional foods and supplements based on traditional Chinese medicine concepts and modern science, with both local and overseas markets in sight.

Known as the Imperium Ultimate series, there are four SKUs to this product range, which will be launched first in Singapore this month. 

The four products include​ powdered beverage sachets, cookies, probiotics capsules, and capsules products for increasing the body's nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) levels for anti-ageing purposes.

Tropical diseases and LC-Plasma: Kirin and University of Malaya to expand research following dengue clinical trial

Kirin Holdings and the University of Malaya will work together on a joint research programme to verify the effects of a lactic acid bacteria in other tropical infectious diseases​ following their latest human clinical study on dengue.

The Kirin Central Research Institute and the Tropical Infectious Diseases Research & Education Centre (TIDREC) at the University of Malaya will collaborate on a series of research studies, focused on Kirin’s proprietary lactic acid bacteria Lactococcus lactis ​strain Plasma (LC-Plasma).

A laboratory for immuno-regulation studies will be opened in TIDREC to facilitate research.

Psychobiotics specialist Bened Biomedical will be expanding its business in the US​ and is also dipping into the pharmaceutical realm by exploring the live biotherapeutic product (LBP) space, the firm’s CEO said.

In the recent NutraIngredients-Asia Awards, the Taiwan-based company took home the Probiotics Product of the Year with its psychobiotics product branded Pure Happiness.  

Containing its proprietary strain Lactobacillus plantarum​ PS128 for supporting relaxation and sleep, the probiotic product has been available in over 20 countries, even countries such as Africa.

Trial first: Angel Yeast studying yeast-based probiotics’ effects on IBD patients

Angel Yeast has embarked on a human clinical study that looks that the effects of a yeast-based probiotics​ on adults suffering from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

The yeast-based probiotics to be tested is Saccharomyes boulardii Bld-3 (S. boulardii Bld-3)​ – a patented probiotic by Angel Yeast designed to address diarrhoea problems and improve digestive health.

The study, which will be conducted by Hua Zhong University of Science and Technology located in Wuhan, will be the first human clinical study conducted on the yeast-based probiotic.
