Trade body Natural Products New Zealand is hoping new industry regulations – which it believes will help boost exports – can finally be passed before the nation’s elections in September.

But as Alison Quesnel, it’s corporate affairs director, says in this video, the rules mooted in the Natural Health and Supplementary Products Bill have been under discussion for years.

“I’ve been working on this 2000,” she said, “we are hoping things will change in April and we would like to see them go through before the elections.”

Watch the video to find out why she deems the rules crucial to boost exports, which she believes are vital to the country’s and the category’s future.

Quesnel was speaking to us ahead of the start of the Natural Products New Zealand summit in Nelson.

In the video she also discusses how the boom in China supplement and health product sales have boosted national firms, as well as revealing how regulatory uncertainty around e-commerce rules in the key export market have been received.

She also debates the potential for exports to South East Asia and India, as well as highlighting why unique products, native to New Zealand, will continue to thrive across the sector, providing smaller outfits in the sector continues to innovate.

We’ll have more reports, reaction and video from the event over the next week.
