Companies seeking to commercialise a probiotic product across the globe face a 'daunting task', which is why trade association the International Probitics Association (IPA) is vowing not to let up in its efforts to achieve a more consistent global regulatory regime.

The organisation's executive director George Paraskevakos was a keynote speaker at our Probiota Asia summit in Singapore, where he gave an overview of the current rules across the globe.

"It's incredibly difficult,"​ he said. "Even if you take a look at the permitted lists of strains, there is huge variation."

We spoke with Paraskevakos after his presentation, where he provided an update on the organisation's efforts to usher in a more harmonised regime through CODEX, and revealed some recent advances in the US rules.

He also discusses the current market performance of probiotics across Asia Pacific, and the booming China sector in particular.
