The New Zealand biotechnology company beat the other two finalists, India’s MuscleBlaze and Malaysia’s Sky Nutraceuticals, with its product Msc1 Tone.
MuscleBlaze was selected for its product MB Biozyme Daily Multivitamin and Sky Nutraceuticals with its product MA+ Microalgae+ Beverage Mixed Fruits & Vegetables.
Hydroxy-methyl-butyrate (HMB), Beta-hydroxy-butyrate (BHB), and ornithine-alpha-keto-glutarate (OKG) are the three key ingredients used in Msc1 Tone.
Speaking to NutraIngredients-Asia, Greg Macpherson, founder of the company, said that the ingredients could work together to support the body composition and muscles even as one aged.
For example, HMB helps to stimulate the retention of muscle in healthy adults who are on a fitness regime, while BHB promotes the process of ketosis and in turn support one’s fat and body composition.
The third key ingredient, OKG, is a combination of amino acid and a molecule involved in the energy production process. Its role is to support the body’s metabolism and improve body composition with more muscle and less fat.
An internal trial conducted by the company found that participants had gained muscle and reduced body fat after four to six weeks of usage, Macpherson said.
The company specialises in developing products for healthy ageing and in the case of Msc1 Tone, it serves to support body composition while they are leading an active lifestyle as they age.
“SRW Laboratories is a healthy ageing company, so we develop products for adults in their 30s and 40s who are noticing changes as they age, and we basically make products help them manage those changes.
“That was the primary driver. But what was really unique was that all of the sudden, there’s younger people who were going to the gym noticing that they were having more improvements from their exercise regime, so it's addressing both body composition as you get older.
“But for people who are looking for some gains and who are younger, then they see benefits as well.”
The company is planning to design new products for supporting different body systems, such as the cardiovascular and endocrine systems.
