China-based supplements manufacturer Angel Yeast is exploring the use of yeast in alleviating symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections.

NutraIngredients-Asia spoke to Zhang Hai Bo, chief executive of Angel Yeast Human nutrition R&D centre, to find out more about the novel uses of yeast in improving human health.

Yeast beta glucan, extracted from cell wall of yeast, was commonly used for enhancing immune system, Zhang said.

Moving forward, the firm is exploring its effects in alleviating upper respiratory tract infections and allergic reactions in infants.

“We will do the clinical trials to know how this product exerts its effects; what kind of quantity and doses are needed for the ingredients to exert the effects,” Zhang said.

With a booming skincare sector, Zhang said that the company had ventured into the skincare market and had launched a line of skin whitening products earlier this year.
